If you have a cat then you are probably aware of something call catnip, it’s a perennial herb that is part of the mint family and comes in dried herb form or spray and is commonly used in cat toys. The chemical compound found in this plant is called nepetalactone which is the stimulant that gets your cat “high” when they sniff it.

If you take a walk down the cat toy section at your local pet store you will see that a lot of toys have catnip inside which help them to play and unleash their wild side.
Is Catnip Safe?
Even though catnip is compared to marijuana it is absolutely safe for your cat and when they take a sniff it sends them into a hyperactive state so they may roll, jump, pounce and generally have a mad few minutes playing with the toy. It’s important to note that catnip doesn’t always have an affect with young kittens so if it doesn’t work, you may have to wait a few months until you try again.
How Long Do The Effects Last?
The effects of catnip are said to last only 10 minutes at a time so when it wears off you’ll have to wait around 2 hours before the magical powers are unleashed again.
